Ironing 101

Okay, so I am proving to myself that I can be quite resourceful. I was at a festival, getting ready in the back of my bus, and I realized I had no iron. But have no fear, I always have many useful things in my bags of tricks! Who knew a hair straightening iron could come in so handy ;-) So tell me, what’s the most resourceful you’ve ever been? Have any good tricks to pass along?

cheers,
natalie

Hey Natalie… Just wanted you to know that I have a very dear friend battling colon cancer right now… 35 years old, happily married, mother of 2. On her website that she uses to keep us posted on her progress, she has eloquently shared messages of her faith and hope in Jesus Christ. She has truly been an inspiration to us all. Guess what song she listens to before and after each session of chemo?? I WILL NOT BE MOVED. She shared your lyrics with us via her website and I just wanted to remind you that the music you create is helping a very sick young woman cope with the battle that she is facing. Thank you.

Natalie, I have had a terrible fear of irons since I burned myself with one when I was younger…now I know how to iron my clothes! I use my straightner every day- and it can get more use now :) I’ll tell you if I end up burning down the house!

  • Lindsey

wow i would saythat is crazy but i have had to actually do that myself and sometimes when i am getting ready for schools it is eaiser to use the straghtener cause you dont have to the iron then wait for it to warm up lol!!

  • Jenny

Oh wow…..I could never imagine using my hair straightener to iron my shirts! That’s awesome!

  • JoLynne

    Natalie,

I am in the army so we have had to improvise in a lot of situations! We have used many items as bowls to eat out of and there are many things that can be used to warm up food! When I was at basic training we weren’t allowed to have any kind of games so we actually made a game of monopoly! We used wet toilet paper to mold into the figurines and dice!! We had a “truth time” where you could tell what you did that you weren’t supposed to do and we told our Drill Sergeants about it so they took it because they thought it was cool! :) It’s crazy what you can use stuff for! :)

    God Bless!

Hmm…once when I went camping I had to dry myself with tissues after a shower because I forgot my towel. But that was more “stupid” than “resourceful.” I can’t think of anything good! You seem to have great ideas though.

I am always making recipes the wrong way … I don’t know what the problem is … anyway, anytime a dessert recipe like some type of cookie or brownie doesn’t come out right (like doesn’t look right but still tastes right) we call it “ice cream topping” and that’s exactly what we use it for.

Well, with 4 monkeys all about…my friend is SO non-wrinkly fabrics. Especially for me, you know the soft, flowing dressy kind…however, I have to make sure and stand far away from any flames…

Oh my gosh Natalie, I’m not even kidding! I was just sitting in my Algebra class this morning thinking about your life on the road, and wondering if you had an iron and ironing board on the bus, cuz if I was on the road I would not be able to wear wrinkly clothes! :) Then I thought to myself, well, even if she doesn’t have one, I wonder if she’s thought about just using her straightener? I’ve totally had to do that before…and hey, what do ya know? It actually works! Eyebrow scissors for bangs, straighteners for clothes….girl, you ARE pretty darn resourceful! :) Lol!

    Love ya!

  • Rachael

Natalie, thats very cute. I love to watch your blog videos. You are such a neat person! You, yes are very resourceful! I believe the funniest thing is, when I looked at what you wrote before I watched it, it sounded like you used a straightner to curl your hair!?! Hah, I thought, hm, Natalie, you are quite the experienced hair dresser ;) . After all, it wasnt curling, but it was ironing! Although, very clever!
    Love ya!
(and like always, keep posting!(: )

    So Natalie,
You really need to try Downy Wrinkle Releaser lol. You just spray it on your clothes, smooth your hands over the wrinkles and waaalaaa….wrinkles be gone. I’m an iron freak, but i havent ironed in like a year because of this stuff!! you are crazy:-)

    Natalie,

Who watches your girls while your on the road? Does your husband travel with you?

  • Tabby Lynn

    Hey Mrs. Grant:

I am calling you that, because it is the polite thing to do. I love the way you iron your clothes. I would have never ever have thought of that. I do have one for you though and it works really well. All you have to have is someone you trust with you life, an iron, ironing board, yourself, and a hair brush, on and a place to lay down. I probably have you wondering now. Let me explain. I was in major need of straiting my hair and had no clue to where my straiten was at. so i had my mom use an iron to do it for me. And you wouldn’t believe it, IT WORKED! I think it did better then my old straiten anyways. All i have to say is, don’t touch your head with it, it hurts and gives you a nice scare. You may have to do some turning and all, but It gets the job done. well take care keep doing what you are doing. i love your work and you. you are a great person. be safe, God bless. Tabby. :D

  • Desi Boo

Oh My Gosh I would have never thought about that before. Resourceful things I always keep handy are rubberbands and saftypens… I will never I mean neverever leave the house with out saftypens and rubberbands… I always find a use for them threw out a day like one time me and my friends used saftypens to quick fix a pair of pants when they had a whole right in the back area… and durring a football game while I was cheering my hairtie broke so I use a rubberband to put it back up in a poneytail.

That is the most resourceful I have ever been.

  • Kelly

=) Thats better than what I do! I hate ironing so much I will stand in front of the mirror and use my hair dryer to get out wrinkles when it isn’t bad enough to justify getting out the iron! Thanks for the handy tip.

  • Becky

Something that I have done recently was use paper clips as safety pins. I didn’t have any pins in my dorm so i used the paper clips instead. It worked amazingly well.

scissors ….i go to prestonwood in dallas, and we had to all wear long black dresses for a tv show we were taping for. i was so excited that i got the right size (never tried it on before the show like i was supposed to!) that i forgot the fact that it had to be HEMMED! Even my 3 inch heels weren’t high enough! So….i did what every girl would do…..took a pair of scissors and hemmed my dress :)

  • Kim

Hi Natalie, you know, I was getting ready for a church service last night, and was pushed for time… my clothes were a bit wrinkled… had just finished curling my hiar, and… you prolly guessed it!! I had the very bright idea to use my already-heated curling iron (LOL – which is NOT a straightener, mind you!) to “iron” my shirt! Ummm… it didn’t work!! lol But thankfully, I was amongst friends in a very relaxed meeting who love me with or without wrinkles! lol Oh! And don’t forget… if you haven’t got a hair dryer, you can stand in front of a fan with a brush, lol. I have also used one of those hand dryers in a public restroom as a dryer! Ya just gotta have brains and creativity to think of these things! lol Good going! And thank you SO MUCH for posting these! You’re just such a fun person! We love you – we really do!

  • Jessie Carlson

Hello Miss Natalie! God Bles you! My tip is kinda silly but I use it all the time. I always keep a few extra hair barretts (sp?) in my purse in case my bangs become super annoying and I want to put them back. Anyway, sometimes if I am eating a little bag of something, like potato chips or sour patch kids, and I don’t finish the bag, I use my extra hair barretts to close the bag so I can stick my snack back in my purse to finish up later. I mean, I may need those last 5 potato chips later! Ha ha! Love ya girl…can’t wait to see you at the Revolve Tour in Anaheim coming up in October. Blessings!

i have totally used a hair straightner to iron my clothes (it’s laziness).
here is a bit of resourcefulness.. when the power has gone out, and i need to curl my hair, i have held the curling iron over the flame on the gas stove to heat it. it works!
desperate times call for desperate measures.

  • brittni

O, my goodness, you are to funny!!! i too have used my staightner to ironmy clothes… funny!

That’s such a great idea! I’m always on the look out for handy hints. I use baby wipes to remove make up from clothes – works really well.

    Love your work babe!

I have had many opportunities to be resourceful from being out in the middle of the Brooks Range in Alaska to down on the farm during harvest time. The funniest and one of the more unsual ones, Jeff Foxworthy would be proud of; is when I was in the farm yard unloading grain quite a few years ago and I guess I stretched a little too much for my jeans because I completely ripped the seams in the crotch area of my jeans. Imagine my dilema! I had to keep unloading grain, ferrying trucks and in between that had no time to find a another pair of pants. Luckily every good ranch hand knows there are plenty of rolls of duct tape around and hopefully he can remember where at least one roll is. I found a role in the shop and dropped down my pants when no one was around and ran several strips of tape up and down the insides of my jeans. It felt awkward but no one noticed and it made it through the rest of the day. I haven’t told to many people about that one, LOL.

    Natalie,

That was a good idea!! You are great!! God Bless you!

    Natalie -

Very resourceful! Nice. Straighteners can be used for a lot… I’ve actually ironed my shirt while wearing it which is totally possible and quick with a straightener. Also if you have a pair of pants with pockets that like, close up and they like to flip up, you can iron them down. There have been many times while getting ready I’ve just used the straightener since it was already on! :)

My family and I went to your concert in Salt Lake. When you came out for your Encore, we moved up and I put Jade my 6 year old daughter on my shoulders. She waved and you waved back. She has been on cloud NINE since! While other kids are in love with Hanna Montana, you are Jade’s favorite singer by a country mile! Thanks for making that one of her most memoriable experiences ever.

    Hey Natalie,
    Hope your babies feel better.

    Natlie-
That is sooo funny! Is your hair naturally curly? Once, my sister, me and our friend, Lizzy were exchanging x-mas gifts, and my sister needed a bag to put her new stuff in. We were in Lizzy’s room, and I already had a bag. She said, “I wish I had a bag for this stuff.” I had a bag of snow gear from a sledding party, we’d been at earlier. For-I-don’t-know-what-reason, I had a gift bag in it. (I knew why, then, I just don’t remember, now)! I pulled it out and said, “I am always prepared!” We laughed for like four days! LOL!

I have actually done this. My daughter had a dress that sat in the clean ‘pile’ It had streams of material come down…and yes, I plugged in the straightener and used it because I did not feel like pulling out all the stuff to iron. She looked great for church :o )

I know this is a delayed response, but I just had to share the resourcefulness that came out of my college dorm experience. One night, my roommates and I really wanted to bake cookies. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to have hot plates or anything in the dorm, and either there wasn’t an oven that we could use or we were too lazy to go use it. And we all know that cookies can’t cook in a microwave. So our solution was the hair straightener. We bought the mini cookie doughs from Pillsbury and had at it. It was slow-going (~5 minutes per cookie), but okay since who needs to bake 36 cookies all at once for 3 people?! I put a video up a few years ago:
